Pizza, arguably the most universal food, is served at just about every function from your first birthday party to your retirement party. Pizza has no boundaries and knows no borders. In the same night, you can have a slice of Canadian, a slice of Hawaiian, and a slice of Greek, and all the while you’re eating an Italian food.
Some pizza purists may argue there are specific ways to eat a pizza – it has to have a certain kind of crust or sauce, and there’s no heckin’ way pineapple should go anywhere near it – but I say, make it what you want.
For this reason, we’re breaking form a little bit with this date night suggestion. Instead of offering you one movie and one recipe, we’re offering you the chance to choose your own adventure.
Here are 3 pizza movies to complement your saucy mood.
Feeling saucy with a side of cheese? This classic Mel Brooks comedy will be perfect for your evening. Although known as a comedy parody film, it actually has everything: science fiction, romance, action, and adventure. It’s kind of like the deluxe pizza of the movie world. The movie itself specifically spoofs the Star Wars trilogy, but you don’t need to have seen Star Wars to get a laugh out of Spaceballs.
Pizza connection: Pizza the Hut, half-man half-pizza slice, is to Spaceballs what Jabba the Hut is to Star Wars.
Mystic Pizza is the coming of age comedy you didn’t know you needed. This movie follows three young waitresses as they figure out who they are while navigating the trials and tribulations of romance. One of the waitresses is played by a young Julia Roberts who said, “The first time I felt I was famous was when I went to the movies with my mom. I had gone to the loo, and someone in the bathroom said in a very loud voice, ‘Girl in stall Number 1, were you in Mystic Pizza?’ I paused and said, ‘yeah that was me.’”
Fun fact: Keep your eye out for Matt Damon, making his film debut!
Pizza connection: Did I mention the waitresses work at a pizza parlor?!?!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and pizza. Name a more iconic duo. I’ll wait.
I’m not going to specify a single TMNT movie because all six are worth watching over the course of an epic pizza marathon. TMNT will tug on the heart strings of any 90’s kid, whether it’s the Vanilla Ice infused movies of the early 90’s or the Michael Bay action juggernauts of the current decade.
Pizza connection: Turtles in the wild eat things like leaves and small insects. Turtles mutated by a strange ooze eat pizza.
You’ve picked the perfect pizza movie for your date, now what should you cook?
Creating a pizza together is a to develop a connection. Think of that scene in Ghost, except instead of Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore making pottery, they’re making pizza. It’s that intense.
To prepare for your special night, head to the grocery store and pick up a premade pizza crust from the bread department. If it doesn’t come with its own sauce, you can find some handy squeeze bottles in the tomato sauce aisle. Grab some toppings you like, that you think your date will like, or that might be interesting. Think olives, pepperoni, bacon, tomatoes, green peppers, banana peppers, and pineapple. Just no onions. Oh, and don’t forget to pick up some nice mozzarella cheese!
To cook, follow the instructions that came with the prepared crust.
You and your date will have fun discussing the best topping combinations and fighting over whether or not pineapple is a real topping.
